Saoirse Ronan may have starred in Oscar nominated films – but it seems Hollywood is still struggling to correctly pronounce her name.

Jessica Chastain fell victim to the tricky Irish moniker as she failed to get it right on presenting Ronan with the Best Actress gong at this year’s Golden Globes.

Chastain looked to co-presenter Chris Hemsworth for help as she opened up the envelope, but he fell silent, leaving her to call Ronan “Shoo-sha” and “Sher-sha” instead of “Ser-sha”.

Chastain was mocked online for not looking up how to pronounce the name ahead of Sunday night’s awards bash, with many also calling out Hemsworth for failing to help her out.

One Twitter user posted: “Did Jessica Chastain just massacre Saoirse Ronan's name? #GoldenGlobes.”

Another wrote: “Clearly Jessica Chastain did not watch the SNL episode with the song on how to pronounce Saoirse’s name.”

A third tweeted: “Can’t believe that jessica butchered saoirse’s name.. (sic).”

Ronan was honoured for her role in Ladybird, and was joined by her mother on FaceTime as she took to the stage.

Speaking to the star studded crowd at the Beverly Hilton Hotel she said: “My mum’s on FaceTime over on someone’s phone!

“I just want to say how inspirational it’s been to be in this room right now. I want to thank all of the women who I love so much, my mother who is on FaceTime, my best friend. Actually, everyone in this room!”

Big Little Lies was the night’s big winner, scooping four gongs including Best Limited Series and Best Supporting Actress and Actor for Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgård respectively.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won Best Motion Picture, Guillermo del Toro took home Best Director for The Shape of Water and Gary Oldman was awarded Best performance by an actor for his role in Darkest Hour.
