Jeremy Clarkson is set to make a shock return to presenting after being lined up to host an episode of BBC programme Have I Got News for You.

Clarkson, 54, is currently suspended from the BBC while they conclude their inquiry into his alleged 'fracas' with one of Top Gear's producers, Oisin Tymon.

But despite the ongoing inquiry, Clarkson has been booked to host the third episode of the BBC1 comedy quiz show next month.

Jimmy Mulville, managing director of Have I Got News For You producer Hat Trick, said: “We always have a field day with Jeremy … Maybe we will get the producer on so he can hit Jeremy Clarkson live on television.”

Mulville also hinted a decision on Clarkson's future could be made soon.

"I’m about to find out," he told a Broadcasting Press Guild breakfast, when asked if Clarkson will be allowed to host the show.

“As far as I’m concerned he is hosting Have I Got News For You in early May. The BBC haven't told me what to do yet. It’ll be an interesting conversation.”

He added: “I think he’s a fantastic broadcaster and I concentrate on that. He’s due to host the third episode.”

Clarkson has appeared on the show several times before, including an infamous episode where he threw a pen at presenter Ian Hislop, leaving a cut on his face.

“We had to stop recording,” said Hislop.

“He refused to believe it was blood. He said it was red biro and then apologised to me afterwards."
