James Corden has been praised for providing “the spoonful of medicine the UK needs” with a London spin-off of The Late Late Show.

Corden, 38, brought his popular US chat show to the capital on Wednesday night and opened the show with a heartfelt tribute to the victims of the London Bridge terror attack.

Corden said the UK is “not a country that feels afraid” and promised to provide viewers with the “silliest, stupidest, most fun-packed show” in the face of the recent atrocities.

Standing outside the Houses of Parliament, Corden said: “I’m so sad when I think about all the times since I took this job that I’ve had to open our show talking about such atrocities, trying to find the right words to say is impossible, because there are none.

“But this time it felt incredibly close to home.”

“We going to bring you the silliest, stupidest, most fun-packed show we've ever made for you to celebrate London and Britain and everything it has to offer, and the people who carried out the attack would hate that.”

Corden made sure to stick to his word by poking fun at Donald Trump and playing Mary Poppins alongside Sir Ben Kingsley in a London edition of Crosswalk the Musical.

Viewers praised the hour long show, which also featured interviews with Nicole Kidman and Kit Harington.

One fan tweeted: “@JKCorden what fun I'm having watching your show!! You are just the spoon full of medicine that the UK needs! Welcome back.”

Another posted: “[James Corden] is absolutely brilliant!! I love watching his show! What a bright light in a dark world!”

The Late Late Show London episodes will air on Sky 1 at 10pm and Now TV on June 8 and 9
