The Cure’s Robert Smith left fans in stitches with his hilariously blunt reply to an over-excited reporter.

The musician gave a cracking response when he was greeted by reporter Carrie Keagan at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.

“Congratulations The Cure – Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees 2019!” Keagan said excitedly. “Are you as excited as I am?!”

Smith replied: “By the sounds of it, no.”

The clip went viral on social media, with many hailing it “the best thing they’d seen all weekend”.

One wrote: “As if I needed another reason to love Robert Smith of The Cure, he delivers this absolutely hilarious zinger. I am so glad these guys are still around.”

Another branded the response “wonderfully British,” while others called him a “hero” and a “genius”.

But that wasn't the only cringe-worthy moment from the red carpet. Keagan went on to ask if she could sit on the head of Smith's guitar while he plays, to which he replied: “That might be a bit tricky.”

Keagan, who has been a fan “since birth”, later responded to the viral clip saying that the interview “made her f****** life” and that she was “high on the moment”.

The British band, who will headline Glastonbury Festival in June, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame on Friday.

As part of the celebrations of the prestigious moment in The Cure’s history, Smith and fellow members of the band – both past and present – attended the ceremony at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.

Speaking on stage at the event, Smith thanked everyone who had “helped them” during the careers as he gave a heartfelt speech as well as paying tribute to Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor who had inducted them.

Harry Styles was also inducted at the ceremony. Stevie Nicks made an epic gaffe as she introduced the former One Direction member as being in NYSYNC.
