BBC Radio 1 listeners couldn’t resist mocking Greg James after he was locked in an escape room live on air.

The breakfast show host was taken away from his show, blindfolded, and put in the back of a van.

He then appeared in the locked room with a keypad on the door which required a six-digit code to open it.

Fellow BBCR1 DJ Scott Mills was roped in to take over the reins while James attempted to guess a slew of combinations.

After watching him fail to guess the right code, viewers teased the presenter with one writing: “Greg’s Dad calling up to laugh at him and someone requesting to play Gwen Stefani Sweet Escape is the ultimate p*** take radio we all need.”

Another commented: “Three hours in. Greg has had some eggs. Three out of five correct on the hangman. A six digit code gets him out. 10 guesses down, 999,990 possible combinations left.”

A third added: “Greg James is going to be in there for at least a week at this pace... step it up a bit!”

James has since requested help from viewers in solving puzzles scattered around the room, which will assist him in cracking the code.

He has been in the room since 8am and is yet to escape.

The game comes after data revealed James added just under a quarter of a million listeners to the breakfast show audience since taking over the slot from Nick Grimshaw last year.

He has drawn an average of 5.1 million listeners in the final quarter of 2018, according to figures from audience research body Rajar.
