US pop star Taylor Swift has appeared to hit back at Kanye West's claim that he made her famous.

West, 38, courted with controversy after he released lyrics in which he appeared to take credit for her success and referred to the singer as a "b***h".

Speaking at the Grammys as she accepted the Album of the Year award for 1989 Swift, 26, encouraged young women to ignore those who "take credit for your accomplishments".

"As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to the young woman out there, there are going to be people along the way who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame," she said.

"But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you're going, you will look around and you will know it was you and the people who love you who put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world."

West faced a backlash after debuting the Swift lyrics at his Yeezy Season 3 launch last week.

Dismissing the claims in a Twitter rant he wrote: "3rd thing I called Taylor and had a hour long convo with her about the line and she thought it was funny and gave her blessings."

He continued: "I’m not even gone take credit for the idea… it’s actually something Taylor came up with. She was having dinner with one of our friends who’s name I will keep out of this and she told him I can’t be mad at Kanye because he made me famous! #FACTS."
