Emma Bunton has stepped down from the Heart Breakfast show after five years to concentrate on her family and the upcoming Spice Girls tour.

Bunton, 42, broke the news on Monday morning’s show, telling listeners she is leaving with a “heavy heart”.

But Bunton, who co-hosts with Jamie Theakston, promised to call-in with all the latest Spice Girls news when she leaves.

She said: “Wow. What an awesome five years I’ve had … I can truthfully say that I’ve laughed my head off every single day. It’s with a heavy heart that I say farewell to Heart Breakfast listeners. Plus, Jamie’s made me promise to call-in to him on the breakfast show with ‘Spice-y news’ and other updates, which of course I will!

“It has been an enormous pleasure to work with such a lovely bunch of people on breakfast, but I won’t be far away and will remain a firm part of the Heart and Global family!”

Bunton joined Heart in June 2009, before teaming up with Jamie Theakston on breakfast in January 2013. She will continue with her Sunday show from 7pm – 10pm.

Bunton has stepped down to spend more time with her children Beau, 11, and Tate, seven, who she shares with partner Jade Jones.

She also recently reunited with Spice Girls bandmates Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Horner for a UK tour next summer.

The quartet – minus Victoria Beckham – gave their first interview since reforming on Heart last month, with Brown teasing listeners with the possibility of a world tour.

She also joked they are “recording an album” next week.

Bunton’s last breakfast show will be on Friday, December 14
