Ed Sheeran has shut down reports that he quit Twitter following a backlash over his Game of Thrones cameo, insisting that he isn’t worried about the criticism.

The Thinking Out Loud singer shocked fans when he deleted his account after his debut in the HBO show, which saw him take on the role of a warrior who led a campfire sing-along. Sheeran’s account disappeared soon after his performance was described as “awkward”.

But Sheeran made it clear that deleting his account after the backlash was purely “coincidental” as he had been planning to leave the micro blogging site for some time.

Addressing his actions on Instagram he wrote: “Last I'll say on this. I came off Twitter because I was always intending to come off Twitter, had nothing to do with what people said about my Game of Thrones cameo, because I am in Game of Thrones, why the hell would I worry what people thought about that.

“It's clearly f****** awesome. Timing was just a coincidence, but believe what you want.”

He finished: “Here is an unrelated picture of me and my wonderful manager riding off into the sunset together.”

Sheeran’s account later reappeared with the post: “I don’t use this anymore, please follow me on @teddysphotos on instagram, lots of love x.”

The move comes weeks after Sheeran – who had a one year hiatus from social media ahead of his recent album – told The Sun that he had “come off Twitter completely” as nasty comments were ‘ruining his day’.

He said: “I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that.

“One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-f*** for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”
