Downton Abbey is getting the royal treatment with a visit from King George V and Queen Mary.

A brand new teaser, aired at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, showing both levels of the house in disarray as they prepare for the arrival of some special guests.

Set in 1927, much of the plot will centre around the visit from Queen Elizabeth II’s grandparents who stay in the stately home made famous by the ITV show.

The clip begins with patriarch Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville, cheerfully quipping about being “modern folk” with “no maid, no nanny and no valet”.

His wife, Lady Grantham, then welcomes the royal couple to Downton Abbey before she curtsies to her guests, alongside her sisters.

Carson, played by Jim Carter, has been hauled out of retirement to help the Downstairs get everything running ship-shape for the visit. Mrs Patmore (Lesley Nicol) is in a particular flap about her increasing list of duties.

Elsewhere, there are multiple references to the family getting ready to leave Downton as The Great Depression looms.

Michelle Dockery’s character Lady Mary, in particular, appears to want to move on but is soon reminded of the Abbey’s place in the small English town by her loyal maid Anna, played by Joanne Froggatt.

The film’s tag line appears to be “We’ve been expecting you”, as written on a series of new posters released last week showing members of the cast preparing.

Viewers were bereft when the period drama, which aired on PBS in the United States, disappeared from screens in 2015.

Downton Abbey is slated for UK cinema release on September 13
