The broom, the dustcart and Wellard the dog were all part of an elaborate cover, it turns out - Dean Gaffney, the star behind EastEnders’s Robbie Jackson, was going for a job with MI5.

Dean Gaffney, who played the dim-witted street cleaner for 10 years, has revealed that he answered an advert for a mobile surveillance officer.

Speaking to The Sun, the former soap star said: "I love spy films and the whole James Bond thing and I've got an inquiring mind, so I thought I'd give it a go.

"MI5 put out an advert looking for people and I thought 'How hard can it be?'. Most spies spend their lives pretending to be people who they're not. I do that for a living."

But Gaffney’s fellow soap actors are not so sure, with Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale in EastEnders, describing him as “more Johnny English than James Bond”.
