Chris Evans mistook Adele for Beyoncé during an interview about her new album.

The Radio 2 Breakfast host started asking the Grammy award-winning star about her ‘alter-ego’ as they discussed 25 on Friday morning, leaving the singer a little confused.

Having clearly not done his research Evans asked her: “Don't you have this kind of alter ego that you pretend to become?"

“No, not really, I mean I chat a lot", Adele responded.

Having clearly not realised his mistake, Evans continued: “No, I've a name here. Sasha Fierce?”

Luckily seeing the funny side, the 27-year-old started laughing and said: “That's Beyonce! Sasha Fierce is Beyonce's alter ego and she's now the Mrs Carter, I wish I was Sasha Fierce."

Clearly embarrassed, Evans apologised for his rather large mistake and quickly moved on to another question.

“I don't know how that's crept in,” he said.

Listeners were quick to call out the radio host on Twitter, with one exasperated person writing:

“Chris Evans just asked Adele about her onstage alter ego Sasha Fierce. Do some research FFS.”

Adele previewed the eagerly anticipated first single from her forthcoming album on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio One show earlier in the day.

Speaking about Hello, she told Grimshaw: “We wrote most of it in the one sitting. The chorus I was a bit stuck with. I knew I wanted to say hello but that was it.

“A lot of stuff in my life has changed not because of my career and I felt myself yearning for my past because it had gone.”

She added: “I didn't want to go back but I missed elements of it. It's about my relationships with everyone I love. I miss a lot of people - not that we've fallen out, but because life moves on.”
