Cheryl and Liam Payne reportedly went their separate ways as they ended up being “totally different people and didn’t have loads in common”.

The high-profile couple announced their split after two-and-a-half-years on Sunday, posting similar Twitter messages about their “tough decision” and asking for privacy .

And now friends of the duo have claimed that the couple with incompatible and had very different approaches to their lives.

A source told The Sun Online: “At the end of the day, they’re totally different people who don’t have loads in common.

“Liam wants to make his pop career work, so he’s happy to fly all over the world and keep in touch by Facetime.

“He’s obsessed with social media and putting his life on there – he loves being famous. Cheryl on the other hand, is very private and her number one priority is Bear.

“She always puts him first, and loves to stay at home with him. In the end, they just didn’t have much in common.”

Standard Online has contacted representatives for Cheryl and Payne for comment.

The couple were plagued by split rumours earlier this year, with Payne admitting they had been through a "tense patch".

But they broke the news over the weekend, with the former Girls Aloud star tweeting their statement.

She wrote: "We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family.

"Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together."

The couple welcomed their son in March 2017.
