Charlize Theron was reunited with ex-boyfriend Sean Penn for the first time since their split at the photocall for The Last Face.

The pair, who called time on their relationship last summer, kept a safe distance as they joined the rest of the cast on the Croisette on Friday afternoon.

Theron and Penn, who directed the new film about a couple who try to keep their romance alive in Liberia, posed alongside Jared Harris, Jean Reno, Javier Bardem and Adele Exarchopoulos.

While Theron and Exarchopoulos posed as a duo later on, the A-lister decided not to have one-on-one pictures with Penn.

This is the first time that the former couple have been reunited since Theron reportedly called off their engagement after last year’s festival.

Speaking out about rumours that she had ‘ghosted’ the actor, Theron recently said:

“There is this need to sensationalize things. When you leave a relationship there has to be some f****** crazy story or some crazy drama.

“And the f****** ghosting thing, like, literally I still don't even know what it is.”

Speaking to WSJ Magazine, Theron added: “It's just its own beast. We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore. And we both decided to separate. That's it.”

According to reports, the pair were seated at opposite ends of the table during the press conference that followed the photocall and didn’t interact.

Penn’s latest directorial effort has received poor reviews and even prompted a chorus of boos at the first screening on Thursday night.

Film critic Mike D'Angelo wrote on Twitter: “Elapsed time in THE LAST FACE before the audience started laughing at it: Maybe 30 seconds. That's not an exaggeration.”
