Caitlyn Jenner opens up about her suicidal thoughts in a forthcoming episode of docu-series I Am Cait.

The former athlete, who is in the process of undergoing gender reassignment, admits that she was once in such a 'dark place' that she contemplated ending her life.

In one scene, the 65-year-old says: "I've been in some dark places, I have been in my house with a gun and said, 'Let's just end it right there, no more pain, no more suffering, that struggle, it's real and I've been there."

In the first episode, which is due to air on August 2, Jenner also has an emotional meeting with her 88-year-old mother Esther as she discusses her transition.

Trying to come to terms with the situation, Jenner's mother says: "It's going to be so difficult for me to think of you as she, and say Caitlyn when I want to speak with you, or call your attention, 'Hey Caitlyn' instead of, 'Hey Bruce.'"

"But your values are always going to be the same, Bruce will still be there, you have the same soul, you have the same soul as you were born with."

Jenner adds: "I was an isolationist, I isolated myself from the world because I didn't fit in, I was kind of stuck in the middle. Caitlyn fits into society better than Bruce.

“I'm very optimistic about the future and I'm dragging you along with me."

Kim Kardashian and husband Kanye West also make an appearance in the first episode, with the rapper praising Jenner for her courage.

He says: "It's one of the strongest things that has happened.

"You couldn't have been up against more, your daughters, you're a celebrity and it was still like f*** everybody, this is who I am."

I Am Cait airs in the UK on E! on August 2.
