The entire cast of the ITV drama series Broadchurch were banned from drinking alcohol while filming to avoid letting slip the identity of Danny Latimer's killer.

The ITV drama series came to a dramatic end when the murderer of 11-year-old Danny Latimer was unmasked as Joe Mille.

Although his identity was kept secret until the finale, Olivia Colman - who plays Detective Sergeant Miller, wife of the murderer - admits desperate measures were taken to ensure no one dropped the bombshell.

She told the Daily Mirror: "We all stayed on the soft drinks at parties as nobody dared to cough up that information.

"You would have let down the team if it had come out. It was nice to remind ourselves that as a nation we are fairly intelligent viewers and we like intrigue."

More than 10 million viewers tuned in to follow the murder mystery, penned by Chris Chibnall, and a second series has already been commissioned.

Despite the success of the series, Olivia admits she was initially hesitant about it carrying on until she heard the screenwriter's plans for the next storyline.

The 39-year-old actress said: "I thought maybe we should leave it alone. But then I thought Chris' idea sounded really good."

Unlike the first eight episodes, the second series will be murder-free and instead focus on the aftermath of the crime in the small village of Broadchurch.

Chris added: "I mentioned to ITV that if people liked it, there was another very different story we could tell afterwards. I'm really thrilled we're going to tell that story, too."
