The upcoming Blade Runner sequel has been given an official title.

The hotly anticipated follow up to the 1982 classic will be called Blade Runner 2049 and is slated for release in October 2017.

Harrison Ford – has reprised his role as Rick Deckard – and is joined by Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Barkhad Abdi, and Dave Bautista.

The film has been written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, while Ridley Scott has handed over directing duties to Sciario director Denis Villeneuve.

Plot details will remain firmly under wraps, but Scott recently teased Ford’s character.

He said: “Harrison is very much part of this one, but really it's about finding him; he comes in in the third act.”

To mark the news Twitter and Facebook accounts were launched under the name, Blade Runner 2049.

The Twitter account released a photo of Villeneuve, original film director Scott, Ford and Gosling spending time together on set.

The picture was captioned: "2049 is just one year away.#BladeRunner 2049 - in theaters October 6, 2017."

The original film was set in a dystopian Los Angeles and followed Ford's character, an ex-policeman, who was assigned to assassinate "replicants". The replicants are androids that look like real human beings.

The film received several nominations on it's release and was awarded with a BAFTA and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association award.
