Ariana Grande will receive an honorary citizenship of Manchester.

The US pop superstar, 23, will be given the title after helping to raise millions of pounds for those affected by the Manchester terror attack.

Grande is in line to be the first recipient after the council proposed a new system to recognise outstanding contributions to the city.

The Dangerous Woman singer organised the One Love benefit concert to raise money after 22 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive at her Manchester MEN Arena concert in May.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese told the BBC: “This seems a fitting moment to update the way we recognise those who make noteworthy contributions to the life and success of our city.

“We've all had cause to be incredibly proud of Manchester and the resilient and compassionate way in which the city, and all those associated with it, have responded to the terrible events of 22 May - with love and courage rather than hatred and fear.”

Some 50,000 people attended Grande’s concert at the Emirates Old Trafford stadium earlier this month which raised £2 million for the victims and families of those affected by the devastating attack.

Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Liam Gallagher, Miley Cyrus and Take That were among those who performed at the event which Grande wrapped up with a rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
