Angelina Jolie has hit back at Brad Pitt’s claims that he has paid her child support, insisting that the money he gave her is simply a loan for a house, which she has to pay back.

Pitt said that his estranged wife’s court filings over lack of child support on Tuesday was an “effort to manipulate the media”, insisting that he has handed over more than $9 million (£7 million) since their split in 2016.

Jolie has now slammed his claims, reiterating her assertions that Pitt has failed to pay his 50% of the child support for their six children and Pitt’s statement was an attempt to “obfuscate the truth”.

“Angelina’s filing of yesterday was both legally appropriate and factually accurate in all respects,” said Jolie’s lawyer Samantha Bley DeJean.

“What has been filed by Brad’s side today is a blatant attempt to obfuscate the truth and distract from the fact that he has not fully met his legal obligations to support the children.”

The statement continued: “Following the incident of September 2016, Angelina and the children needed to move from the family home, which Brad chose to keep, including all of its contents.

“Brad was asked to assist in the expense of a new home for Angelina and the children, but instead he loaned Angelina money, for which he is charging her interest on a payment plan.

“Angelina will of course honor that loan. A loan is not, however, child support and to represent it as such is misleading and inaccurate.”

Bley DeJean went on to say that Jolie is asking Pitt to pay half of their children’s expenses but alleges that, as of yet, he has failed to do so.

“Angelina is asking Brad to pay 50% of the children’s expenses. He has not. Angelina has had to shoulder the majority of those without his contribution for the past two years,” she said.

“Child support is not optional in California. Typically a father of means would pay these expenses voluntarily without the need for a request or court order. We are hopeful that this can be resolved without further delay or posturing.”

Pitt’s attorney said the Hollywood star had paid more than $1.3 million in bills for Jolie and their children since they separated.

He also loaned her $8 million to help her buy her current home, according to claims in court documents filed on Tuesday.

On Tuesday Jolie’s spokeswoman said her filing was intended to provide closure to the marriage "and allow her and Brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children."

Pitt and Jolie were married for two years and enjoyed a 10-year romance that had made the pair one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples.
