Actor Will Ferrell has secured his place as one of comedy's all-time greats after receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Anchorman star was all smiles after being honoured with a star among Hollywood's greatest celebrities.

Ferrell, 47, made a rare public appearance with his wife of 15 years Viveca Paulin, 45, and their three sons Magnus, 11, Mattias, eight, and Axel, five on Tuesday.

Among those who attended was Ferrell's close pal John C. Reilly, who co-starred alongside the comic in comedy hits Step Brothers and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

His Saturday Night Live castmate Molly Shannon also made an appearance, as well as the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who praised the star for his achievements.

Reilly, 49, also decided to give a speech, telling the crowd: "Maybe some day, in 50 years, people will look down on the sidewalk and say the things that we say today about some of these people: "Who the f*** is this guy?

"But I hope not. This man is deserving of all the praise we give him today."

He then proceeded to perform a hilarious poem titled 'On the Street' about Ferrell's life in acting.

Actors usually have a back-up plan in case their career doesn't work out, and Shannon revealed Ferrell had devised a contingency plan for himself.

"He said, 'I don't know, what if acting doesn't work out? What if animation totally takes over and they don't need real human actors?'" Shannon said.

"I said I don't think that's going to happen, and he said, 'I could just have a simple life, driving a truck or living on a farm and driving that truck on that farm.' So, he had a backup plan."

Ferrell made his breakthrough in the acting world after seven seasons on Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2002.

He went on to feature in classics such as Zoolander (2001), Elf (2003), Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Blades of Glory (2007) and Anchorman 2 (2013).

His next comedy, Get Hard starring Kevin Hart, is set for release on Friday.
