Amy Winehouse was one of the most original, gifted and edgy vocalists in the history of the British music scene.

But a life marked by talent was also marred by tragedy, and the world lost one of its most important musical voices at the age of just 27 on July 23 2011.

On the fifth anniversary of her death we look back at her life in pictures, from her powerhouse on-stage performances to her tempestuous and ultimately destructive personal life.

Winehouse, unbelievably, had just two albums under her belt when she died of alcohol poisoning at her London home.

The singer sparked critics’ interest when she dropped her debut, Frank, in 2003, which went on receive a nomination for the Mercury Prize.

But it wasn’t until the release of her follow-up, Back to Black, in 2006 that Winehouse quickly became a global sensation.

Along with her newfound stardom and critical success came the glare of the spotlight.

Struggling with alcohol and drug addiction and the breakdown of toxic relationships was too much for the fragile star to cope with in the public eye.

Back to Black posthumously became the UK’s best-selling album for a while after her death, rocketing back up to the number one spot.

Lioness: Hidden Treasures, an album of previously unreleased material, was made available to the public in December 2011 and debuted at the top of the album chart.

The singer’s father Mitch Winehouse will be marking the fifth anniversary of her death with a special tribute concert.

He is set to perform the songs his daughter loved the most at the Pizza Express Jazz club on Sunday evening.
