Blur drummer Dave Rowntree today said he was proud of the way the British public had rallied to support Syrian refugees.

He spoke as he launched his own fundraising effort — an auction of pop memorabilia including Blur’s “The Magic Whip” ice cream van which featured in their Hyde Park summer concerts.

The Star Car Boot Sale also includes a jacket worn by Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner at last year’s Brit awards, a Burberry jacket belonging to Marcus Mumford and clothing and a jewellery box from Sir Paul McCartney.

Proceeds from the eBay sale will go to the International Rescue Committee.

Rowntree, 51, said: “Almost everybody I spoke to jumped at the chance. People are dead keen to do something.

It’s one of those crises where people say ‘I’ve got to do something’ in a way we haven’t seen since Live Aid in the Eighties.

"I’m very proud of what the British public is doing.”
