Afrobeats star D’banj has told of his grief after losing his young son during an apparent drowning accident in Nigeria.

The popular Nigerian singer, real name Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, shared the news with fans on his Instagram account on Sunday, saying that he was going through “trying times”.

Daniel Oyebanjo III, who had recently turned one, died during an accident at the family’s Ikoyi residence, reports Pulse Nigeria.

Oyebanjo, 38, shared a black post on his Instagram account, alongside the caption: “Trying Times. But my God is Always and Forever Faithful.”

Oyebanjo and his wife Didi Lineo had celebrated their only child’s first birthday just a few weeks before his death.

The couple threw their son a Minions-themed party at their home back in May, sharing snaps on their social media accounts.

Oyebanjo had been due to attend Sunday night’s BET Awards in Los Angeles, where fellow Afrobeats star Davido paid tribute to his friend.

As he collected the Best International Act award, the musician said: “Before I go on I want to send condolences to my big brother, the actual artist that pave the way for us to be on this stage, D’Banj.”

He added: “My condolences I wish you.”

Fans of the musician were quick to pay their condolences on social media following the devastating news, with many replying to Oyebanjo’s post.

“Speechless right now OMG why? big brother am so sorry. May God be with you and strengthen you and your family it's well,” wrote one person.

Another wrote: “Boss I'm so sorry for the loss... May God comfort you at this time.”
