Britney Spears's husband Kevin Federline has filed court papers seeking sole custody of the couple's two children, a day after it was announced the pop princess is seeking a divorce. The former backup dancer and aspiring rapper is also seeking spousal support.

Spears, who gave birth to the couple's second son just two months ago, cited irreconcilable differences in court documents revealing the split.

Michael Sands, spokesman for Federline's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, said: "Kevin is prepared to go the distance in order to do what he feels is necessary to protect and safeguard the children and will not be intimidated or dissuaded from pursuit of those goals."

Spears, 24, and Federline, 28, have a one-year-old son, Sean Preston, and an infant son, Jayden James, who was born on September 12. Spears is seeking custody of both children.

Spears married Federline in the autumn of 2004. They had a ceremony in September, but court papers state the couple were officially married on October 6.

Spears waived her right to spousal support and asked that each party pay their own legal fees. She also listed assets including "miscellaneous jewellery and other personal effects", her earnings from after the separation date, and other assets to be determined later, as separate property - and thereby off-limits to Federline.

The couple contributed to frenzied media coverage with their self-filmed reality TV show, Britney & Kevin: Chaotic.

It was the first marriage for Federline, although he was still dating his pregnant girlfriend Shar Jackson of TV's Moesha when he met the pop star. Jackson gave birth to Federline's second child just months before he married Spears.

Born in Kentwood, Louisiana, in 1981, Spears got her first taste of fame at age 11 when she joined the The All New Mickey Mouse Club TV show. Her fellow Mouseketeers included future superstars Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.

In June Spears was pilloried in the media after going on TV to deny her marriage was in trouble. Sporting a tight low-cut pink top and tiny denim mini skirt, messy hair and clumped mascara, the heavily pregnant star tearfully insisted her relationship with "amazing" Federline was "awesome".

She also defended her parenting skills, following an outcry in February when she was snapped driving with baby Sean Preston on her lap.
