There have been no shortage of contenders over the course of her 40 year career, but this time Cher has truly outdone herself with her worst wig ever.

The flamboyant singer startled the audience with course, brassy blonde tresses during an appearance at the Oprah Winfrey Show this week.

The 61-year-old, who has long rejected the option of aging gracefully, abandoned her naturally straight look in favour of unruly poodle curls for the occasion.

Cher, who has yet more bizarre stage wigs at the ready after recently kicking off a stint at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, was joined during her interview by fellow diva Tina Turner, 68.

Winfrey, 54, quizzed the pair about their thoughts on getting older in the pop world.

Cher replied frankly: "I think it sucks."

Cher also discussed her brief relationship with Tom Cruise - 16 years her junior - in the earlier stages of his career during the '80s.

She said: "I was so crazy about him. He was so wonderful ... And he was so, like, different."

Cher has been married twice. Her marriage to Sonny Bono ended after 11 years while her second to rock star Gregg Allman lasted a mere nine days.

She told Oprah Winfrey she was currently single. She broke up with her last serious boyfriend, actor Rob Camilletti, nearly 15 years ago.

"Dating is a strange thing," she declared. "It's not every man who can be comfortable with me. Being Cher is a hard thing and difficult for him to hold his place."
