Swank, 33, whose film Freedom Writers opens next month, lived out of a car when she first arrived in Hollywood.

In the movie she plays real-life English teacher Erin Gruwell who sought to inspire a motley crew of underachievers at Wilson High School in Long Beach. The actress was also one of the film's executive producers.

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Swank moved to Southern California as a teen with her mother to further her acting hopes.

She received best actress honors for her work in "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby."
