Colour specialists Pantone have earmarked Rose Quartz and Serenity as the shades that will make waves this year, breaking their usual tradition of championing just one colour.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone’s Colour Institute, the tones “induce feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation…and create balance in a chaotic world.”

When paired together, the pastel pink and blue hues are calm and fresh. There are plenty of pieces available to bring the look into the home. The Lars small sofa in Fjord Camel from Sofa Workshop (£999, sofaworkshop.com) has a smart Scandinavian feel. Team it with the Sophia Pattern Accent Swivel Chair from DFS (£549, dfs.co.uk) and Ferm Living’s Geometry Cushion in rose or petrol (£49, amara.com) for an eclectic style.

“Pink is often a colour people shy away from in the home but if used correctly it can be very sophisticated without being aloof,” says DFS design director Helen Leigh Jones. “Serenity on the other hand is cool without being cold. Combined with Rose Quartz they give a real sense of wellbeing.”

In the bedroom, Lexington Company’s Jacquard bedding (from £129, lexingtoncompany.com) and the Urban Collective range (£27 for bedding; £119 for a throw) beautifully reflect the Pantone tones.

Furniture Village’s Velvet Crush rug (£129, furniturevillage.com) adds a feminine touch. Alternatively, the Nova Kilim rug by Olli Ella (£175, olliella.com) is made by artisans in India using Fair Trade practices. Each rug is crafted by hand on a loom, using hand-dyed New Zealand Wool.

Accessorise with a set of ceramic vases in pastel blue and pink from Bloomingville (£114, amara.com) or Ikea’s Snoig work lamp in light pink (£20, ikea.co.uk). The Roberts Revival Radio is also available in duck egg blue and pastel pink (£170, johnlewis.com).

To make a more permanent mark, purchase Brintons’ Bell Twist Dusky Rose (£40 per sq m, brintons.co.uk) or Bell Twist China Blue (£40 per sq m, britons.co.uk) carpets. Then kit the kitchen out with Churriana Blue Glazed tiles from Bert & May (from £3.20 per tile, bertandmay.com).

A subtle approach works just as well statement pieces with these colours.
