Potter ponders play-off puzzle

Mick Potter would not be surprised to see Bradford make the play-offs

Bradford coach Mick Potter thinks his side are facing "mission impossible" in their play-off pursuit following the club's points deduction but he would not be surprised to see his players pull it off.

The Bulls were docked the maximum six points by the Rugby Football League's board of directors as their punishment for going into administration. The deduction takes immediate effect and drops Potter's men out of Super League's top eight ahead of Sunday's trip to second-placed Warrington.

"It makes it hard, if not close to impossible, to make the play-offs," Potter said. "That might be a slight exaggeration but it's going to be tough. We've got some hard games coming up, finishing up with Catalan away."

Huddersfield and Hull KR were the big beneficiaries, leapfrogging the Bulls in the table to seventh and eighth respectively, but Bradford play both teams in the run-in so their fate remains in their own hands.

Potter said: "The players have been great. They've been doing everything they can to get the two points every week and hopefully that will continue. They're riding that rollercoaster at the moment but I can't fault their efforts on the field."

The news was bitter-sweet for former Bradford and Great Britain prop Paul Anderson, the newly-appointed Huddersfield coach who still has a soft spot for his old club.

"I've got some strong affinity there," he said. "It's not nice to see what's happened - I had some good times there - but it is what it is."

Meanwhile, the long-running saga is set to take a new turn on Friday when the club reach the latest deadline for administrator Brendan Guilfoyle to find a buyer.

The RFL's board of directors are scrutinising the offer which was made to Guilfoyle by a group of local businessmen known as the ABC consortium and in particular the strings attached to it.

The consortium want a guarantee that Bradford will be allowed to compete in Super League in 2013 and are also keen to buy back the lease to Odsal Stadium from the RFL, conditions that could prove major obstacles to any deal.
