Kenya's Edna Kiplagat has made history in Moscow by becoming the first woman to win consecutive World Championship marathon titles.

The 33-year-old, who triumphed in Daegu two years ago, did so again in sweltering conditions in the afternoon sun in the Russian capital.

Having completed the lapped course along the embankment of the Moskva River, she took the acclaim from the smattering of fans in the Luznhiki Stadium to cross the line in two hours 25 minutes 44 seconds.

Italy's Valeria Staneo was second, 14 seconds further back, with Japan's Kayoko Fukushi getting bronze.

While the Ethiopian challenge failed to materialise, there was plenty of reason to cheer for Great Britain's Susan Partridge, who sealed 10th place in 2hrs 36mins 24secs.

Her team-mate Sonia Samuels was 16th in 2:39.03.

Scot Partridge said: "It was about places today and I think that helped me psychologically as I started off and I was way back. For a minute I did wonder if I had been a little bit too cautious, but then I thought if I have then it means that I can come back quicker and pick people off faster.

"I didn't really think about times and I wasn't paying too much attention to the kilometre markings, it was just all about the next person to pick off. It was a proper race."

Eilish McColgan, whose mother and coach Liz won the world 10,000m title in Tokyo 22 years ago, made her first ever global final in the 3,000m steeplechase.

The 22-year-old ran a huge personal best of 9:35.82 to finish seventh in her heat and go through as a fastest loser.

British team captain Christine Ohuruogu began her bid for 400m gold, six years on from her one and only world title, in confident fashion, cruising through her heat with room to spare and winning in 50.20.
