Gallacher triumphs in Dubai

Stephen Gallacher has won his second European Tour title
3 February 2013

Scotland's Stephen Gallacher produced yet another moment of magic on Sunday as he grabbed only his second European Tour title in 404 events going back 20 years.

After a see-saw battle with South African Richard Sterne, the 38-year-old nephew of ex-Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher made his fifth eagle of the week at the Dubai Desert Classic by sinking a 110-yard wedge from the rough at the 16th.

Winner of the 2004 Dunhill Links on home soil at St Andrews, world number 111 Gallacher also holed out with a seven-iron from 175 yards in his opening 63 and closed his third-round 62 - the lowest round of his long Tour career - by finding the cup with a 40-yard bunker shot.

He took the £262,817 first prize by three strokes with a 71 and tournament record-equalling 22 under par total.

Chile's Felipe Aguilar and Dane Thorbjorn Olesen tied for third and England's Lee Westwood joint fourth after hitting his second shot into the water on the par-five last.

Like England's Chris Wood, winner in Qatar last weekend, Gallacher climbs into the game's top 60 and should now qualify for the 64-man Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona later this month.
