St Helens coach Nathan Brown is convinced Jonny Lomax will keep on getting better after another dazzling display accounted for Wakefield on Friday night.

The 22-year-old further cemented his place at full-back by claiming his second hat-trick of tries of the season, and scoring 28 points in total, as Saints overpowered the Wildcats 52-18 at Langtree Park.

Lomax moved from scrum-half when veteran Paul Wellens was injured last month and Brown seems to have decided that will remain his position, saying: "He did well, he is doing very well and is only going to keep improving. He has got all the attributes to play that position very well."

Wellens is hoping to return from his calf problem against Salford next week, but accepts he may be playing elsewhere on the field, with loose forward earmarked.

Speaking in the matchday programme, Wellens said: "It isn't an issue for me. I want to be in the team and helping it win something. It will be a different challenge for me and one that excites me going forward."

Wakefield coach Richard Agar found plenty of positives in the Wildcats' display.

He said: "I was really pleased. That probably sounds odd for a coach whose charges have let in 50 points but our effort, spirit and commitment were tremendous. At the end of the day the scoreline blew out in the last 15-20 minutes and a lot of class from the other team told on the scoreline at the end of the day.

"But with a depleted side, I think every one of our players can look themselves in the eye and say they have given their all."

Agar admitted Lomax had been one of the main differences between the sides.

He said: "He was a handful. He hits the ball at speed, he really challenges that edge and the fact he can pass as well as he does puts defenders in a lot of doubt. He is very strong as well. He is a very good player and we had a lot of problems with him."
