An investigation is under way following the death of a tourist on a popular beach.

The man, who was in his early thirties, was found unconscious on Towan Beach at Newquay, Cornwall just before 2am on Saturday morning by a member of the public.

Devon and Cornwall Police said attempts were made to resuscitate the man, who was visiting the popular Cornish resort from Hampshire, but he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed but details will not be released pending formal identification," a force spokesman said.

"At present, police are treating the death as unexplained and are appealing for any person who may have information about this incident to make contact via the 101 non-emergency telephone number."

Police appealed for witnesses after saying the man's death was not being treated as suspicious.

"After carrying out an initial investigation officers are treating this as a non-suspicious death at this time," a force spokesman said.

"A file will now be prepared for the coroner. The deceased's family have been informed.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this man late on Friday night or early Saturday morning, particularly in the vicinity of Towan Beach."
