Supermarket giant Sainsbury's is creating up to 16,000 temporary jobs over the busy Christmas and New Year period.

Around 2,000 posts are expected to be made permanent, the company announced.

Angie Risley, group human resources director, said: "Christmas is the busiest time of year in our stores, so in order to give customers the best possible service we are boosting our teams with extra support.

"It's also a great opportunity for people to join our thriving business and get some experience working for a busy retailer.

"We've also consolidated our position as a top employer and been recognised with a gold standard by Investors in People."
