Spanish city A Coruña has unveiled its first “cow walk” in the city centre as a symbol of its milk supplying prowess

The Spanish region Galicia, located in the northwest of the country, is renowned for its dairy farms and abundance of cows.

Galicia produces the most milk in all of Spain and maintains its position as the 10th in the European rankings as more than 8,400 families are dedicated to dairy farming.

With one million cows residing in the city, there is roughly one for every three inhabitants and despite the total population of Galicia growing, there remain 63 towns where more cows live than people.

Given their importance in the region the cows have become a symbol for Galicia, one many dairy farmers are proud to have as an icon.

The cow walks, in place of zebra crossing, hope to remind those within the city that the cow covered farmlands are only a stone’s throw away.

Casa Grande de Xanceda, the dairy farm behind the cow crosswalk creation, followed up the unveiling with a farmland booth where they adopted the slogan “Galicia, we are the milk.”

Between the bales of hay and corn stalls, the most adventurous had the opportunity to milk a life sized fake cow, Rosalia.

Guests could also use augmented reality glasses and experience how Galician cows live.

Following the city halls approval for the cow walk, Casa Grande de Xanceda has vowed to push for more crosswalks in the main Galician cities “to incorporate at least one [per city] as homage to the cow and all Galician cattlemen.”

Jessica Ray, head of marketing at the Casa Grande de Xanceda, said: “We don’t want this cow walk to be a mere anecdote but rather for the idea to be exported to the streets of other cities and towns in Galicia. This first one is merely the prototype.”
