A non-profit group director who sparked a race row after branding Michelle Obama an “ape in heels” is being allowed back to work.

Pamela Taylor, head of US-based Clay County Development Corp, was suspended from her job after making the reference in a Facebook post comparing the First Lady to Melania Trump.

She reportedly wrote: “It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House.

“I’m tired of seeing an ape in heels.”

When the comments went viral, the West Virginia woman was suspended from her role.

But Ms Taylor will be allowed to return to her job later this month, according to the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

The paper reported she is due to start work again just before Christmas on December 23.

Her agency has been warned that any discrimination shown by staff could jeopardise its future funding, the paper claimed.

Beverly Whaling, the mayor of Clay, was forced to resign after her own response to the Facebook post was made public.

She reportedly wrote: "Just made my day Pam."

Councilman Jason Hubbard offered an apology to those who were offended, branding the comments “horrible and indecent”.
