Comedian Will Ferrell has poked fun at scandal-hit Toronto mayor Rob Ford by singing about his demise on television.

Playing the character of newsreader Ron Burgundy from his hit film Anchorman, the American actor jokingly told US chat show host Conan O'Brien that Ford had asked him to perform his re-election campaign song.

The song, Loverboy's 'Working for the Weekend', contains the lyrics: "Everyone's watching to see what you will do/ Everyone's looking at you" followed by the poignant line "Everybody needs a second chance".

The performance has already been watched thousands of times on YouTube since the show aired last night.

Introducing his hilarious skit, Ferrell said: "My dear, dear, dear friend mayor Rob Ford of Toronto is running for re-election and I hold him in the highest regard- he is the best."

When O'Brien questioned the drug scandal mayor's integrity, Ferrell replied: "He is a controversial figure because he's so damn honest. I'm just so thrilled."

Mr Ford, who has been stripped of his mayoral powers after he admitted smoking crack cocaine and binge drinking, was seen delivering an expletive-laden rant and threatening to kill an unidentified person in a recently aired video.

He has since apologised for the footage, saying he was "extremely inebriated".
