Lauren Bacall took Hollywood by storm making her screen debut in 1944 at the age of 19. Her illustrious career would span 70 years as she worked until her death, aged 89.

From Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe to Nicole Kidman and Woody Harrelson, Bacall has graced the screen with a wide range of acting talents. Here are some of her best performances:

To Have and Have Not

Director Howard Hawks’ wife saw Bacall on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, which prompted him to screen test her for his next movie. She landed the part in this 1944 thriller playing the lounge singer Marie ‘Slim’ Browning as the love interest for Bogart, who she would later marry in real life.

The Big Sleep

After her marriage to Bogart, Bacall returned to the screen again with him under Hawks' direction for this quintessential 1946 film noir. Bacall and Bogart would work together four times before his death in 1957.

The Mirror Has Two Faces

Bacall stars as the mother of Barbra Streisand’s character who is struggling to find love in this 1996 romance set in New York City. Bacall’s work would garner her first and only Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Murder on the Orient Express

Bacall brought Agatha Christie’s book to life in this ensemble big screen adaptation of the murder mystery. Sidney Lumet’s 1974 film boasted other talents including Sean Connery, Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman and Martin Balsam.

The Shootist

John Wayne hand picked Bacall to star in this 1976 picture after the two enjoyed their earlier collaboration in Blood Alley. Ironic to the film’s premise of a dying gunfighter looking to spend his last days in peace, the film would be Wayne’s last movie.

The Sopranos

In season six, Bacall made a cameo playing herself in the episode Luxury Lounge, where she was mugged by Christopher Moltisanti.
