An audience member was crowned the “real winner” of the US Presidential debate after he became an internet sensation when he stood up to ask a question.

During the second live head-to-head between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, undecided voters were given the chance to put questions to the two presidential candidates.

But one uncommitted voter, Kenneth Bone, instantly became an internet hit after reading out his question about energy plans.

Dressed in a red jumper, white shirt and white tie, Mr Bone rose from the audience and beamed as he addressed the presidential candidates.

“What steps will your energy policy take to meet our energy needs while at the same time remaining environmentally friendly and minimising job loss for power plant workers?” he asked.

Internet sensation: Kenneth Bone

After putting his question to Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump, Mr Bone, who wore glasses and has a moustache, began trending on Twitter.

Social media users commented on Mr Bone’s genuinely pleased-to-be-there attitude and his choice of outfit.

One Twitter user wrote: “Kenneth Bone looks like the human version of a hug. #debate #kenneth.”

Comedian Patton Oswalt said: “Guys? #KennethBone seems like a genuinely decent man and he asked one of the only substantiative questions in the #debate.”

American writer Hensen Karp said: “"Hey, weird, I have 4,000,000 text messages" - Kenneth Bone in 2 minutes when he looks at his phone #debate.

Music group The Gregory Brothers wrote: "Winner of debate = Kenneth Bone."

Mr Trump, who is several inches taller than Mrs Clinton, loomed close behind her as she answered questions from the voters.

At other times, he paced the stage, repeatedly interrupting her and criticising the moderators.
