US rapper CeeLo Green spoke out to reassure upset fans after footage which appeared to show a mobile phone exploding in his face went viral.

A video emerged which showed the Gnarls Barkley star in a recording studio with a phone pressed to his ear before it explodes in his face, leaving him falling to the ground.

The clip ended with the 42-year-old musician, whose hits include Forget You, lying motionless on the ground.

On Saturday, the star recorded a Facebook Live video in which he reassured fans he was “alive and well” and added he was “upset” if anyone was “emotionally disturbed” by the clip.

He revealed the video was taken from a new project he is working on but didn’t fully explain the circumstances behind the explosion.

He said: "I just want to let everybody know that I am alive, that I'm well, and I'm OK."

“Truthfully, I'm really upset that anybody had to be emotionally disturbed by what they saw today.

“What you saw today was a clip from a smaller video that we were shooting for a new project I'm doing called Gnarly Davidson.

“It's supposed to set up… and introduce the new character identity.

“I want to thank everybody for their love and support and concern.”

Before he sent the message, fans and celebrities reached out to the singer on social media to express their concerns for his welfare.

R&B superstar Omarion tweeted to Green: “Sooo manyyyy prayers & light to you brother!!!! I [praying] your hearing is ok!!!”

Some social media users branded the video as “publicity stunt” following media coverage of exploding mobile devices.

In October, tech giant Samsung said it was scrapping production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after reports handsets were catching fire.

More than two million of the £740 phones were recalled by Samsung in September following reports of exploding batteries.
