Mystery evidence found by rangers searching for a 12-year-old boy who was snatched by a crocodile "strongly indicates" the boy has died.

A search was launched after the boy was taken as he swam in a water hole in the Australian outback on Sunday. One of his friends was also mauled in the attack.

Northern Territory Police Acting Commander Michael White said evidence found Tuesday "strongly indicates" the boy died from the attack. White wouldn't say what the evidence was, but said DNA testing will be conducted to confirm the identification.

The boy was snatched as he swam in World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, southeast of the Northern Territory capital of Darwin.
