A police stop in Australia took an unexpected turn when a baby koala bear was found concealed inside a woman’s handbag.

Officers in Queensland had detained a 50-year-old woman over “outstanding matters” last night when she confessed that she was carrying a baby animal.

“Not quite believing their ears the officers cautiously unzipped the bag and found this gorgeous boy,” the force said.

The koala was handed over to the Queensland RSPCA, where he was said to be recovering well.

They have named the koala Alfred.

Police were checking the woman’s claims that she found the joey in the road at night and was caring for it.

Koala bears are officially deemed a “vulnerable” species across Australia and are protected by law.
