Pictures of the year: The best photographs from 2016

It has been a year that tore up the rulebook and photographers have been there to capture the highs and lows with some extraordinarily powerful images.

From Brexit and the rise to power of Donald Trump, the deaths of megastars like David Bowie and Prince through to the celebrations of Andy Murray at Wimbledon, these striking images capture the triumphs and tragedies.

Some, like the photo of five-year-old Omran Daqneesh, sitting in an ambulance after being pulled from a building in Aleppo, have remained ingrained on people’s minds long after they were taken.

Terror attacks in Brussels, Nice and Berlin have also provided haunting images of a threat to Europe that shows no sign of slowing.

Other scenes from closer to home have recorded a tumultuous period in British politics, with the departure of David Cameron and the arrival of Theresa May at Downing Street.

Across the pond, American politics saw arguably its biggest ever electoral shock with Mr Trump storming to victory over a shaken Hillary Clinton.

That led to one of the more awkward White House photocalls of recent times.

With Mr Trump heading to the Oval Office permanently and the promised triggering of Article 50, 2017 could be even more tumultuous than the 12 months preceding it.
