France’s far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen has been spotted visiting Trump Tower in New York.

The French National Front leader was spotted grabbing coffee with aides inside US President-elect Donald Trump's skyscraper before being whisked upstairs in an elevator.

It was not clear who she was meeting with but Mr Trump’s incoming press secretary Sean Spicer said she was not scheduled to meet the President-elect or his team.

Her surprise visit to New York comes just months before France’s next presidential election.

Ms Le Pen previously described Mr Trump’s victory as a sign of hope for her own campaign.

The French politician’s chief of staff was quoted as saying the trip to New York was a “private visit” and that a meeting with Mr Trump was “not on her public agenda”.

Ms Le Penn currently holds a narrow lead in opinion polls ahead of the first round of voting in France’s presidential election, which takes place in April.
