A man was scooped up by a recycling truck and "compacted several times" after sleeping in a dumpster.

Ivan Rosalio Mendez Perez escaped with just a fractured leg despite having to be freed from the truck by US firefighters, Albany Police Department officials said.

The 23-year-old was treated at a medical centre in Oregon after the driver of the truck heard him “yelling” from the back.

Captain Eric Carter told the Albany Democrat Herald that Mr Perez was “lucky to be alive”.

It not clear why he was sleeping in a dumpster.

In May 2011, the body of 50-year-old Gordon Gene Lemke was found among a load of cardboard at a California recycling plant.

He had be crushed to death after being picked up by a truck.
