Pilots in Los Angeles have reported seeing a person in a jet pack flying next to them, prompting an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
At least two airline crews reported seeing the jet pack flying in the path of incoming jets on Sunday evening near Los Angeles International Airport.
An American Airlines pilot said in a radio transmission aired by Fox 11 Los Angeles: "Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack."
The controller asked: “American 1997, OK, thank you, were they off to your left side or your right side?"
“Off the left side at maybe 300 yards or so at our altitude,” the pilot responded.
A second pilot reported: “We just saw the guy pass by us in the jetpack", to which the controller responded: "Person in a jetpack reported 300 yards south of the LA final at about 3,000ft, 10-mile final."
Another air traffic controller added: "Only in LA".
FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller told AFP in a statement: "The FBI is aware of the reports by pilots on Sunday and is working to determine what may have occurred."
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also investigating the incident.
“Two airline flight crews reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jetpack as they were on their final approaches to LAX around 6.35pm PDT Sunday,” the FAA said in a statement on Tuesday.
