Japan's Prime Minister delighted viewers of the Olympics closing ceremony - by making an appearance in a Super Mario outfit.

As Rio 2016 ended and Tokyo prepared to take over the Olympic baton, Shinzo Abe made it clear the 2020 games would not shy away from the country’s pop culture.

At the end of the ceremony, Japan's PM popped up out of a giant green pipe dressed up as Mario from the video game.

He sent social media into overdrive, with one person tweeting: “That was the prime minister of Japan, dressed as Mario, emerging from a pipe. What a world we live in.”
