A Japanese father has stabbed his 12-year-old son to death after the child failed to study for an entrance exam.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that Kengo Satake, 48, told police that he “argued with his son for not studying” before a test.

The boy was apparently due to take the examination in a bid to gain a place at a leading private junior high school.

Police officers working in Aichi prefecture in the city of Nagoya said that the son, named Ryota, died from loss of blood in hospital on Sunday.

The father was arrested after hospital staff phoned the police, and told officers that he had stabbed Ryota “by mistake.”

NHK reported that the boy was often told off by his father for not studying, and said the school the boy was hoping to get into was one of the leading private schools in Aichi prefecture.

According to local media, Ryota’s mother was at work when the incident occurred.
