Several people have been killed after a truck was hit by a train which later derailed in Hungary.

The horror collision occurred shortly before 5am on Tuesday at a train crossing in Mindszent, near the Hungarian-Serbian border. All of those killed are understood to have been in the van.

Local media outlet Delmagyar reported that as many as seven people have been killed.

Pictures of the scene show the overturned train. There were 22 passengers on board at the time, 10 were said to have been injured, two seriously.

Local news site Mávinform reported that the light barrier was working well but the van drove in front of the train despite a no entry sign.

The state railway company confirmed a train on its way from Kiskunfelegyhaza to Hodmezovasarhely had crashed.

The truck drove onto the tracks, ignoring the red lights, it said.

Firefighters from Hódmezővásárhely, Szentes and Szeged, were called to the scene, as well as volunteer responders from Szabolcs.
