Harvey Weinstein has resigned from the board of his own company more than a week after the firm sacked him over sexual harassment and assault allegations.

The board of The Weinstein Company confirmed on Tuesday that the disgraced film producer had resigned.

Weinstein still reportedly holds roughly a 20 per cent stake in the business but the future of that asset is not yet known.

The 65-year-old was fired as chief executive from the company – although remained on the board - after the New York Times published the first three claims of rape against him on October 5.

Dozens of actresses, including Hollywood A-listers Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow, have since made accusations of sexual harassment abuse against the 65-year-old producer.

Through his spokeswoman, Weinstein "unequivocally denied" any claims of rape and sexual assault, as police in the US investigate allegations.

A host of stars have since slammed Weinstein over his alleged behaviour, with Dame Judi Dench calling the claims "horrifying" and Meryl Streep calling the women who spoke out "heroes".

The allegations date back to the late 1980s with the latest assaults alleged to have taken place in 2010, 2011 and 2015.

Hollyoaks actress Lysette Anthony, believed to have made one of the allegations to Scotland Yard, claimed she was raped by Weinstein at her London home in Chelsea.

The Weinstein Company has made and distributed blockbuster films including The King’s Speech and Silver Linings Playbook.

The board behind the Oscars revoked Weinstein's elite membership on Saturday and the Producers Guild of America has also started the process of expelling him.

The Writers Guild of America West also issued a statement on Saturday saying it "stands in solidarity" with the women who have spoken out .
