Five people have died after two small planes crashed mid-air in western France.

Authorities said the crash happened between two light aircrafts in Loches near the city of Tours at about 4.30pm on Saturday.

Emergency crews, including 50 firefighters rushed to the scene where they cordoned off the crash sites.

The smaller plane, a microlight, had two passengers on board when it crashed with another plane, a Diamond DA40, which had three tourists on board.
