Fighting bull gores cyclist to death

A tourist cycling along a quiet country road with his wife was charged and gored to death by a 700lb bull bred to fight a toreador in the bullring.

The 54-year-old German and his wife aged 47 were passing an estate owned by the Ricard drinks company near Mejanes in the Camargue region of southern France.

As they neared an enclosure full of bulls one escaped and attacked.

A police spokesman said: “The bulls had been fighting among themselves, that’s how their fence was broken. The victim was charged and gored in the chest.”

The man was taken to hospital in nearby Arles but died of his injuries.

Spain is the bullfighting centre of Europe but it is also very common in the south-west of France.
